I’m addicted to this shit. I just spent an hour looking online for and contemplating buying a $200 crankset. A Sugino 75 crankset to be exact, one which would give me a more common bolt pattern to pick and choose various chainrings easier. I’m still contemplating buying the new cranks and a new chainring, but for now, I have decided to push aside my desire for more gear inch madness in order to save for my true desire, a Bianchi Pista Concept frame.

Everyone here in Hawaii loves the NJS Japanese Keirin frames and parts, Nitto, Makino, 3Rensho, Panasonic, Samson, and anything Japanese with sparkles. Although I too like some of these frames, the bike that I would truly have a fixgasm over is the Pista Concept. Specifically the 2004 model, which is matte black with the celeste logo.

Sadly these things are incredibly hard to find. I also like the new white models, especially if everything else on the bike is 100% murder-status blacked out. I guess I’ll have to see… might be a good idea to actually have the cash to spend before contemplating all these possibilities. For now, time to get back to work!

Since I’ve become accustomed to the fact that pink isn’t that popular in the world of men, I essentially dismissed the idea of this amazing combination ever being found in real life.

Today, ladies and gents, I stumbled upon my dream of a hot pink Bridgestone! Sadly, it’s wayyy too small. Probably for some tiny japanese track chick. But here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

P.S. Just in case any of you readers out there want to say, buy me a track frame as a gift, my most wanted list is as follows in somewhat of a particular order: Bianchi Pista Concept, Felt TK2, Argon18 Electron, Bridgestone, Panasonic, and then any other sexy frames are nice too :)

I’ve been writing a ton of Javascript lately, and after stumbling upon a warm chestnut of nougat and caramel covered javascript goodness earlier today, I am wishing I would have seen it earlier.

I’ve learned most of what it is in this post the hard way after lots of trial and error, reading of tutorials, re-reading, experimenting, building, etc… Actually building things has been the best way in my experience to learn Javascript, but using this as you go and even reading it before diving into something will make those of you who aren’t entirely familiar with Javascript pro’s in no time at all.

It details a ton of the various ways to play with functions. Standard procedural functions, using functions as variables, passing functions to functions, using functions as arguments in other functions (Lambda, which until reading this, was a word I had only ever heard in the math world), anonymous functions, and having functions automatically call themselves.

It also does a great job explaining all of the standard methods and properties of functions. Truly an amazing resource, something which I will probably read many more times. Certainly one of the best javascript related articles to ever pass through my corneas. Tasty.

I also just realized in the “Recent Articles” section that mister Hunlock has a lot more knowledgeable tasty treats of javascript goodness. Get reading!

I forgot to tell all of you here on the interweb, but iLovePhotos is sort-of kind-of in the private beta phase.

Pretty cool right? Sort of. We have quite a ways to go, but we’re making good and steady progress. Oliver Beattie was added to the team a few short months ago in April, and has truly been an amazing person to work alongside. He gave our web team the major boost it needed and has helped us in many more ways than any one person on our team might know. He’s the guy responsible for the redesign of our previously tired and lonely Blue Lava website. Sadly, Beatle Mc Beatle Beattie is leaving us on Tuesday and heading back to the rock over the pond, and then a big continent, and then another pond, England. Cheers Beattie! See you in a few weeks :)

We’re doing some pretty cool shit at Blue Lava. Facial detection, photo organization, visual tagging. Thankfully we’re not re-creating a text editor in a web browser. We’re actually building a pretty exciting — please, gods of the interweb, do not smite me for saying this next word — platform. A platform for sharing your photos literally automatically, while still giving you the tight control that you might want over those pictures your EyeFi camera accidentally automatically uploaded from that crazy night with your girlfriend in Mexico. Or maybe… it wasn’t your girlfriend and it should have been, hah.

But really, photo websites right now are total shit. Even Kindfish, a site that I initially designed and worked on, is total shit. Flickr is great as an online photo storage system, and I love Flickr, but in general the tools that most of this world are using (eg. Kodak Easy Share) are total crap.

We’ve got two new interns in town, David “dkock” Keck who has been here for a little over a week, and Dustin Bachrach who just landed this evening from San Antonio, Texas. Yeehaw! Dkock (he chose to be called this, so don’t look at me, I just work here) is pretty fucking rad actually. I really had no expectations, but coming into the office is a lot more fun now-a-days. Dustin just landed and is probably far into a nice deep sleep right now due to the time difference, but I am sure tomorrow is gonna be a pretty fun day.

HammerHead is really the heart and soul of iLovePhotos. It’s a desktop application which helps you organize your photos based upon the people in them. This makes it easy to recall those photos later because you’ll always remember who it was who stripped down to their bare ass and streaked through the mall. Or at least you’ll remember their bare ass, and you can easily create visual tags of bare asses in HammerHead, we built that functionality right into the core.

So things are fairly exciting. Stressful, yet exciting at the same time. Expect to hear more from me on the iLovePhotos front in the next few days/weeks. Meanwhile check out the website and throw your name into the hat for a beta invite. Comment here and I might just give you a few. If you’re lucky.

I got two Dell 2408WFP’s a while back here at Blue Lava and have pretty mixed feelings towards them. Right now I am in a pretty crummy mood so this mini-review-rant will be pretty biased towards the negatives, but do enjoy.

The company actually ordered four units. Two for me, and two for the other graphic designer here. My boss subsequently felt he needed one, so snuck an extra fifth one in there too. When they arrived, they were massive. Massive. A friend of mine has two of the previous revision, the 2407WFP (which are actually better displays in a lot of tests), but seeing four of these right next to each other was just obsurd.

Not only are they fucking huge, but they are thick, and emit more heat than a hippopotamus menstruating in July. I’m a big guy myself, so sitting with two space heaters in front of you all day and night is not pleasant. Especially when i’m surrounded a bunch of nine-to-fivers who won’t pay good money to keep their developers nice and cool while working into the wee hours of the morning. The developers come first, they are the ones on the ground doing all of the infantry work. The guys who spend a few hours a day in the office in their aloha shirts can go play in the fuck-off sandbox.

I’m typing this on my trusty ‘ol sidekick — my Macbook Pro — because my shiny gleaming 8-core Mac Pro between my legs right now is essentially the headless horseman thanks to the amazingly awesome quality control at Dell.

My first monitor turns on and works just fine, but twin #2 isn’t on the ball today. He keeps going into sleep mode, and won’t ever respond to anything. Another thing that this marvelous evening has taught me is that if there are no input devices plugged into the display, you can’t use the onboard menu system! Also, the trusty Dell manual offers no way to do some sort of hard reset. Everything needs a hard reset.

Yes, I’ve tried unplugging the power cord. Yes, I’ve tried “rebooting my computer”. All the typical shit. Plugging #1 into my Macbook works just fine. #2 chokes like a barely legal teen and falls back into power save mode. I’ve tried different cables, different ports on the display. I’m going to try VGA right now. Oh what do you know, FAIL! So three of it’s display ports do not work at all (DVI1, DVI2, and VGA with a VGA=>DVI converter). I’ll go ahead and assume that the component, S-Video, and other ports don’t work either. So now I have a real space heater. It’s a shame I live in Hawaii and not Alaska. I should move to Canada and become an Ice Trucker. Would rather troubleshoot a jake brake than this Dell plastic disaster.

Time to give the wonderful technicians over in Mother India a call!

To be honest though, this isn’t that big of a deal to me. These displays are too big and hot. Two displays are certainly nice, but honestly one does just fine. The CTO here and my close friend Jason will object, touting that two displays increase productivity by a significant margin. I personally think it’s a matter of choice and feel that one display, for me is just fine. My other display is primarily used for iTunes, Adium, and other miscellaneous crap which doesn’t really warrant a secondary monitor.

In fact, one of my co-workers and another close friend Oliver Beattie, only uses one of his dual displays. The week prior to his arrival here in Honolulu we ordered him dual 22′ Dell displays, and the only thing he uses his second display for is his Adium contact list. He’s been here for three months and still hasn’t adjusted!

So in just a few moments I will gladly unplug the uncooperative “#2″ and put it over in the corner, like an obnoxious ginger freckle-faced stepchild. At some point this year someone here at the company will get to replacing it. I personally have no desire or motivation to, so chances are it will just sit in the corner and collect lucky Hawaiian spirit of aloha dust.
