Mediatemple Move Successful

After a day or so of downtime due to moving from Dreamhost to the (ss) and then the (ss) to the new (gs), I am finally back online. The process was fairly seamless. I simply uploaded my files, imported my database from the old Whalesalad, and now I’m serving content right out of the grid!
I still need to get Mint back up and running, but that shouldn’t be too difficult. So far I am really loving the speed of the (gs) server compared to the DH machine. FTP is considerably faster, theres almost zero lag when moving from folder to folder. SSH is fast too. Also, many of you should notice a significant increase in speed (particularly with the livesearch). I think the reason that the site was so slow on the DH box had something to do with the fact that they don’t use local MySQL servers.
I was a bit worried when I read that the (gs) servers didn’t use localhost either, but however Mediatemple did it, they did it right. Everything is nice and speedy, just the way I like it.

Cool.
Nice!
I have the basic MT hosting plan and I’m debating whether I should go try to switch it now… I mean there’s no real reason not to, but I’m feeling kinda lazy about having to change all the config files paths and whatnot… Was it bad or long at all?
Theros: It was VERY easy. What is better, and what surprised me quite a bit, was the fact that when (mt) automatically moved my files over to the (gs) server, they automatically edited my wp-config.php and mint db.php with the new database information.
It was the easiest webhost transfer I have ever done. I would definitly go for it. The new administration interface is much nicer than the old webcontrol, plus there are loads of other improvments. (Newer versions of all the server software, Rails support, etc…)
No reason not to in my opinion. Mediatemple Grid Server’s FTW!
The mini site of your dock,
http://www.whalesalad.com/dock/ don’t work.
greets, werner.
Mind if I ask why you made the switch? I’d been considering moving one of my sites over from GoDaddy to DH or MT for quite a while. I’ve heard good things (from other bloggers and such) about both companies, and read through both sites trying to make a determination about which one to go with… but I have to admit one of the things which finally prompted me to switch (to Dreamhost) was the way you talked about them on your about page. You seemed very pleased with their feature-set. I’m just curious why you left.
Congratulations on the move. :)
I’d also like to know what prompted you to move from DH. I’ve been with the since Feb. and never had a problem with them. I spose their mail server might not be the best, but I have my own mail server here at home that I use.
Did you have a bad experience or just wanted to change to (mt)?
I’m just moving to (mt) at the moment — currently my sites run on the old shared hosting with http://domaingo.de, but they soon will run on my (gs).
I learned about the (gs) becoming available and instantly signed up for one. I think it’s a great concept — and you just confirmed my estimation of the (gs) being faster than my old server. And there’s Ruby on Rails! Until now I couldn’t run RoR apps elsewhere than on my own localhost.
Well done, I did it yesterday too! Yeah, them editing my database settings really surprised me too. Shame we’re gonna have to wait to run Django, though!
I’m considering moving back to Dreamhost. I only bought one month of the (gs) and to be honest it isn’t all that great. The improved speed is nice but I am pretty sure through a new theme design and some good optimization, I can achieve the same thing on DH.
Looking forward to a new design.
So Michael, you are going back to Dreamhost ?
Why (mt) seems to bit faster and that is the biggest problem with Dreamhost, when you got many php plugins on wordpress the page work slow.
What is the minus with (mt), besides they cost 2x more.
i made the switch from (ss) to (gs) 36 hours ago … the 3 phases of the process went smoothly but my sites have been unreachable since the end of the migration (24h as of now).
if this was expected they should have said so in the migration guide.
i’ve been with Dreamhost from 98 till 03 and their customer support is (was?) a lot better …
MT is the way to go all around class A hosting. I just queued my site to migrate from ss to gs. Lets see how seemless it goes.
Awsome, I also recently switched to (gS) and just gettin gmy blog and other websites back up now. :)
