OSX Style Web Dock

The idea to create a “dock” came to me when my mom, who I recently transitioned to Gmail [Hosted], emailed me asking how to access her email from work. She headed to Whalesalad to use the contact form, and sent me a message form there. It got me thinking, “If my mom knew to go to Whalesalad, maybe I could use Whalesalad as a place to keep commonly accessed links, almost like my Firefox bookmark bar. That way, when I am at a friends house or an internet cafe, getting to the sites I, or others (my mom) visit most, would be very easy….

Check out the minisite for a demo and how you can put an OSX style dock on your site! I also implemented the dock here on Whalesalad, so mouseover the top and you should see it slide down!

  1. This looks great. I’ve been trying to do come up with something similar to this for a while now, but haven’t been able to come up with anything. I’ll download this and have a stab at it.

  2. and now you’re gonna have to watch what you write on your blog because you know you’re mom will read it ;)

  3. NIce. A plugin for WordPress would be superb.

  4. Incredibly Cool,
I definitely second coxis’s idea of a WordPress plugin. That would be the absolute shiznit.

you say “Opera doesn’t do anything either”,

but in my opera 9.0 browser it works fine :D
    i like it.

    greets, werner

  6. Check this out!!. I found it via my WordPress Admin Panel.

  7. Great example of a dock type navigation. Really smooth. One small issue though… if the user has javascript off then that user does not see an alternative navigation.

Check it by turning off stylesheets and the list ittems obvoiusly are visable but if you rollover one of the links the page content slides up ontop off the navigation so the user can no longer navigate the site.

Just a couple of points I wanted to mention. If you could look into these issues then it would completely rock…!

    ;)

  8. this is acting kind of weird in IE 6.0 on PC

Because it’s a PNG, that get’s a blue background in IE.

  10. Love the dock, but when I click to go to the minisite, it gives me a 404 Not Found page.

  11. Your dock’s minisite page turns out a 404 error, not sure if you were aware of that or not ;)

  12. Very cool Michael! :D

  13. Hello!

This looks real cool, however the 404 is deceiving :(
Would it be possible to reupload this?

    Thanks a lot!
